Dr. Leo Fong Featured on the Cover of the Monterey Herald’s 2026/2027 Medical Directory

Central Valley Vein & Wound Centers is proud to announce that Dr. Leo Fong, our founder and medical director, is featured on the cover of the Monterey Herald’s 2026/2027 Monterey County Medical Directory.

The annual directory also includes an in-depth feature about Dr. Fong’s career, his approach to comprehensive vascular and wound care, and the mission of Central Valley Vein & Wound Centers to improve access to specialty care and help prevent avoidable amputations.

The feature, titled “Providing Comprehensive Care to Meet the Unique Needs of Each Patient,” introduces Monterey County readers to Dr. Fong and highlights the work being performed throughout our network of wound, vein and vascular centers.

A Physician-Led Approach to Wound, Vein and Vascular Care

Dr. Fong is a board-certified vascular surgeon with more than 25 years of experience treating chronic wounds, venous disease and vascular conditions.

His medical training includes Johns Hopkins University, Tufts University School of Medicine, the University of Southern California, the UCSF Fresno surgical residency program and a vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He also served as an associate professor at UCSF for more than 25 years.

Throughout his career, Dr. Fong has remained focused on a fundamental problem: many patients with chronic wounds receive fragmented care or are unable to access the specialists they need before their condition becomes more serious.

That experience helped shape the integrated model used by Central Valley Vein & Wound Centers today.

Treating the Cause, Not Just the Wound

A chronic wound may be the visible problem, but successful healing often requires identifying and treating its underlying cause.

Non-healing wounds can be associated with:

• Venous insufficiency

• Peripheral arterial disease

• Diabetes

• Poor circulation

• Infection

• Swelling and edema

• Pressure or limited mobility

• Nutritional and other chronic health conditions

Our approach combines advanced wound care with vascular evaluation, vein treatment, diagnostic testing and ongoing clinical management. This allows our providers to address the wound while also investigating the conditions that may be preventing it from healing.

As Dr. Fong explains in the Monterey Herald feature, the patient’s goal is not simply to complete a procedure—it is to heal the wound and preserve the limb.

Improving Access and Preventing Avoidable Amputations

The article also explores the barriers that prevent many patients from receiving timely care, including transportation challenges, limited insurance coverage, language differences and a shortage of specialty services in underserved communities.

Delaying treatment for a diabetic foot ulcer, venous leg ulcer or other chronic wound can allow infection and tissue damage to progress. In severe cases, this can lead to hospitalization or amputation.

As Dr. Fong states in the feature:
